Vintage 2020 will be remembered for its “two” summers. December (the “first” summer) was the hottest on record causing significant stress to the vines. Fortunately, January and February (the “second” summer) had cooler than average days and nights. The start of February brought significant rain, thunderstorms and a continuation of cooler than average temperatures. This allowed vineyards to recover and freshen up from the earlier season heat. The warmer, drier spring and start of summer reduced vine vigour and led to smaller berries and lower yields. But vines were able to recover and enjoyed a long, gradual ripening period allowing flavours to slowly and fully develop.
